Reif Kushiyaki is a restaurant we designed for Michelin-awarded Chef Reif Othman, bringing his unconventional take on Far-Eastern cuisine to life through immersive interiors. As the first licensed, full-service location in the UAE, the space blends elevated design with playful storytelling, offering an intimate and dynamic dining experience where guests are fully immersed in the energy of the open kitchen and bar.

Concept

The DesignConcept

The design is rooted in the idea of refined rebellion breaking traditional norms while preserving the authenticity of Japanese craftsmanship. Inspired by Chef Reif’s bold approach to flavor and his passion for Astroboy, the interiors balance raw textures with contemporary elements, creating an ambiance that feels both elevated and approachable.

To reflect the chef’s avant-garde style, the space integrates unexpected design details - from Astro Boy inspired murals to matcha whisk pendant lights. The L shaped layout ensures a natural flow, allowing guests to engage with the culinary theatrics unfolding in the open kitchen. Every design element, from seating to lighting, is curated to enhance the dining journey.

The Bar asthe Focal Point

As Reif's inaugural licensed restaurant, the bar takes center stage at the Dubai Hills location. Diverging from traditional designs, this bar is not merely an element; it serves as the restaurant's heartbeat. It anchors the space, providing guests with a prime view of the action while facilitating a smooth transition between dining and lounge experiences. The design of the bar guarantees a consistent flow of energy, whether patrons are savoring the signature cocktails or interacting with the chefs at work.

A defining feature of Reif Kushiyaki is the open-plan kitchen, framed by large windows that invite diners to witness the precision and artistry behind each dish. This transparency enhances the storytelling aspect of the restaurant, ensuring that food isn’t just served, it’s performed.

The process of collaborating with TwentyOne06 began with them getting to know me personally and understanding where I'm coming from. They adapted to my expectations while adding their own unique design input. It was a challenge for TwentyOne06 because many restaurant designers tend to replicate designs, but they didn’t. Instead, they transformed the design into what it is today, which is commendable.
